I know…the struggle is real, right!
Many times the difference between a 6-figure online business and a business that is struggling to bring in money on a consistent basis is not in the course or the product or the membership site, but in the customers (or lack thereof!)
Attracting your qualified leads and turning those leads into ready to buy customers is something every successful course creator needs to be able to do.
Some people will see you on social media or visit your website and just be ready to join your course right away; BUT in most cases, it’s not that simple and you’re going to have to do some work, turning those followers into paying fans!
When it comes to making money in any business, the math is simple. The better you are at attracting qualified leads, the more money you’re likely to make.
So, if you’re not already focusing on lead generation as part of your online course marketing strategy, then you are going to want to make sure you pay attention (and apply) to the tips I am about to share with you in today’s lesson.
Generating Unlimited Leads To Your Online Course Sales Funnels
step 01. build your lead magnet.
When it comes to driving leads to your business one of the easiest and most effective ways to get people to notice you, is to offer them a lead magnet.
So, what’s a lead magnet exactly!
With so many options being thrown at them from all types of businesses, brands, and organizations, people guard their email addresses far more than ever before. Nowadays, you need to incentivize your visitors to join your email list.
And “Sign up to our newsletter” just ain’t gonna get it!
A lead magnet also known as a “freebie,” “free offer” or “opt-in incentive,” is a high-value, irresistible piece of content related to your paid digital product or course that you give away to your audience for FREE in exchange for their name and email address. Your lead magnet is basically a product without a price tag that is created with the sole purpose of enticing your visitors to become subscribers.
step 02. create a lead funnel.
To be able to deliver a lead magnet you need to have what’s called a lead funnel. And to set up this lead funnel, you will need the following things:
01. An email service provider: if you plan on generating email leads, you’re going to need to use an email marketing platform. This is a service that will collect leads for you, help you manage those leads, and then enable you to send emails to them via a broadcast or automated email sequence. My email marketing service of choice is ConvertKit. Here are just a few reasons why I fell in love with ConvertKit:
- The platform is well designed and extremely easy to use
- Emails are delivered reliably and as expected
- Their customer service team is super helpful
- The autoresponder sequences are easy to implement
- It comes with powerful tagging and segmentation features
- It’s extremely easy to make changes and updates
- And it’s competitively priced.
02. Opt-in Form or landing page: Once you have your email service provider set up, the next step is to add a form to your website.
Your opt-in box or form is the entry point and START of your lead and sales funnels. It’s where visitors enter their name and email address to receive the freebie you promised them. Once your prospect enters their name and email address, they are on your email list because that opt-in box integrates with your email autoresponder.
Every email marketing service will have a tool that allows you to create this form, and they’ll all have different ways on how you can add their form to your site.
Alternatively, you can make use of a tool like LeadPages for adding great-looking opt-in forms, popups, landing pages, and more.
So, just in case you’re asking what’s a landing page…A landing page is a page on your site that is designed to convert visitors into subscribers. It is different from other pages on your website in that it has an opt-in box or form that allows you to capture a visitor’s name and email address in exchange for a freebie. The sole purpose of your landing page is to convert visitors into leads.
When asking someone for permission to email them, it’s important to offer your audience something of value first (aka a lead magnet) to encourage them to opt-in to your list – this could be something as simple as a printable, though something more substantial like a mini-course or a challenge would increase your opt-in rates.
step 03. write your follow up email sequence.
Once you know what type of lead magnet you’ll think will bring the leads to the yard, it’s time to start thinking about how you will begin to nurture your subscribers and move them toward a buying decision.
An automated email sequence will allow you to to nurture and convert clients or customers. This email sequence consists of a series of well-crafted (and pre-written) emails that are sent out to your new leads over a scheduled period of time (typically a between a few days and a few weeks) that help demonstrate your value, eesta lush credibility and of course, make them aware of your online course or product offering.
With your lead magnet, opt-in form and follow up email sequence in place you now have what’s called a “lead funnel” which is essentially the vehicle that collects people’s emails (with their permission)and moves them through the different levels of your sales cycle on autopilot.
So, once you have these key components the next step is to grab the attention of your ideal audience and invite them to opt-in!
step 04. launch your funnel and generate leads.
By creating and promoting great quality content that invites people to your website through a CTA, a percentage of that traffic is going to see your lead magnet, want it and then opt in to your list.
Just as a side note a CTA (aka call to action) is an invitation for a user to take some desired action. In marketing, your CTA is what tells your target audience what you want them to do next. The simplest example of a call to action is “Buy now!”
Now to really build some momentum in the lead generation department, you should be employing multiple lead generation strategies to increase the quantity and the quality of the leads you’re generating.
Here are a few things you can try:
Creating multiple lead magnets
Lead magnets are like Lays potato chips…you can’t have just one! Ideally, you want to have multiple lead magnets that attract multiple segments of your core audience (i.e. something for beginners and something for more advanced users).
Having multiple lead magnets will undoubtedly increase the number of people you’re able to drive back to your site. Imagine having multiple commercials on multiple channels, versus having just one commercial that you keep relaying to the same viewers. When you can have more than one iron in the fire, you can exponentially increase your opportunities to grow your email list.
Now to put your lead magnet strategy on steroids, you can consider creating content upgrades.
Content is a variation on the standard freebie or (lead magnet) that elaborates on or complements a piece of content the reader is already interested in. (i.e. a particular blog post or resource page).
So essentially a content upgrade is a lead magnet that is created specifically for individual blog posts, as a way of delivering additional value, information, or resources related to a single piece of content.
Let me give you an example…
In this post about generating leads, I know that it would be helpful for my blog visitors to have some sort of ‘lead magnet checklist’ that they could use when trying to come up with ideas for creating high-converting lead magnets!
So, do you see what I just did right here? I inserted a content upgrade right in the body of the blog post that invites readers to get their hands on a resource that can help them apply what they are learning.
Free mini-course or challenge
A great way for course creators to generate leads is to offer free access to a lesson or individual module of your signature course.
Not only is this a way of getting people onto your email list; if you set this up through a membership site or an LMS system such as Teachable, you’re also getting them to create an account with you on your paid product platform.
Instead of sending folks their freebies via email, you get people to actually log into your site to access your free resource and by bringing people into your “paid community”, it makes it easier for you to then promote your paid course to those leads.
And if they choose to upgrade to your full course, they already have their account set up, so it’s even easier to become a paid student or customer.
So, if lead generation is not a priority for you, today is the day we change that!
