When I first started my online business I had no idea how hard it was going to be to get people to sign up for my email list. The only thing I was focused on was getting readers to my site, having no clue that the real prize was in growing my email list. It took me 18 months to realize that maybe I should be spending a little more time building a strong, responsive email list. I just shutter the think about the income and impact I missed out on. This is a prime example of you don’t know, what you don’t know…til it’s too late. But that was 6 years ago and while a costly lesson, it’s one that I hope you don’t make as well.
Sooooo, today I am going to share with you 7 actionable steps to help you grow your email. This is the first of a series of FREE weekly gameplans I’ll be dropping in your inbox each Sunday afternoon to help you plan your success for the upcoming week.
Why do you want to grow your email list, you ask? To sell more stuff, make more money, and rule the world! No, but really:
#1: First of all, you own your email list. If Facebook was to fall off the face of the earth (no pun intended) then that is an entire following you’ve lost. Having people on your email list is something that belongs to you. You own it!
#2: Email is personal. People aren’t necessarily hanging out on your blog all day long or waiting for you to post on social media, but they are checking for those emails on a regular. So, why not meet them right where they are? This builds relationship, loyalty and trust.
#3: Your email list leads straight to the money?. Cha-ching. When done right, your mailing list has the potential to make you thousands of dollars in sales with one click of a button. It’s what I like to call push-button profits! Every person on your list is a potential customer, client, or reader. Follow the steps given for each day to help you get more email subscribers, starting right now!
DAY 1: GET A RELIABLE MARKETING TOOL
Get a reliable email marketing tool where you can store your subscribers’ emails, create opt-in forms (a signup form where your visitors will enter their info to subscribe), and send emails. I use Aweber but there’s Mailchimp, GetResponse, ConvertKit and a slew of others. The point – get you one!
DAY 2: CREATE A KILLER FREEBIE
Make it easy for people to sign up. Create a killer freebie like an ebook, worksheet, video, private Facebook group, challenge, email course, or real pretty printable that is full of value. If you’re thinking that giving away your best stuff is a bad idea, read this blog post HERE then get to creating something amazing!
DAY 3: ADD AN OPT-IN + STRONG CTA
Once you’ve created a killer freebie then add an opt-in box w/a strong call to action and a catchy headline in a visible part of your blog or website. In fact put your opt-in in multiple places. Some examples: Your Homepage, After Your Blog Post, About Page, Top Bar, Sidebar, Footer, Comment Box + in your Email Signature.
DAY 4: OFFER A CONTENT UPGRADE
Offer a content upgrade. What the heck is a content upgrade? Just check out my blog posts and you’ll see exactly what it is. It’s the same as “offering a freebie” tactic but for this, you’re offering a specific bonus that is relevant to the content your visitors are currently reading on your blog (in exchange for their email address).
DAY 5: PLAN OUT YOUR CONTENT
Plan out your content, yo! For real. To grow your email list, you have to produce amazing content consistently. Stay on top of your email list. Make it a priority. Plan out your content and schedule it in advance if it is overwhelming to you. Produce content that is results-driven and actionable; content they would run + line up for.
DAY 6: PIMP THE HELL OUT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Pimp the hell out of social media. Social media is a powerful tool to bring people to your opt-in and have them sign up. Use Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to promote your opt-in. These are massive social sharing platforms that can give exposure to the free things you’re offering when people sign up with their email.
DAY 7: RINSE + REPEAT
Building your email list takes consistent and constant action. Study what’s working, ditch what’s not and continue trying new strategies that fit your business and brand.
