Social media is a total time suck.

And that’s putting it lightly!

Now while social media is a necessary (and fun) evil, it doesn’t have to be all-consuming and so freakin’ overwhelming!

There is a simple system to creating and sticking to your social media activities so that you can effectively build your business on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest without feeling guilty at the end of the day.

And today I’m going to show you how to do it!

In this week’s post I am going to share 4 simple steps you can use starting today to create a “Stick To It” social media plan that allows you to get more out of you efforts without wasting your day away.

As an online entrepreneur or small business owner it is crazy (and counter productive) to spend hours a day on social media. Now while every entrepreneur should be taking action to build their social engagement and using sites like facebook, instagram and pinterest to grow and expand their brand presence; social media should not feel like a losing battle.

It’s important to understand that the way you approach social media when you’re talking to friends and family should be different than the way you do social media to market your business and brand.

When I’m just on facebook casually – talking to my friends or playing around – I’m popping in and out throughout the day, but when it comes to business, you can’t do that. In other words…”Ain’t nobody got time for that!!” You have to be more structured, consistent and engage with purpose, especially if you are going to make social media profitable for you.

Planning your posts, then automating your activity, is key to keeping your sanity when it comes to social media. When you think about marketing your business online you don’t have to be marketing in real time. When you turn on the tv and watch a commercial the actors aren’t there live on your tv, right? and the same applies when it comes to marketing your biz.

01

FIND A SOCIAL MEDIA AUTOMATION TOOL

The first step is to find an automation tool you like. There are a ton of tools available. You can use Buffer, Hootsuite, or more platform specific tools like ScheduGram which is used for scheduling your Instagram posts. Even Facebook and Youtube allow you to schedule your posts or videos right there within it’s platform.

Social media should be intentional and strategic. When you automate your efforts you can go back and track it and see what works and what doesn’t. Planning ahead allows you to be results-driven and not reactive.

02

CATEGORIZE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS

The next step is to categorize your posts so when you sit down to write them out, you have a specific theme or goal in mind. Ask yourself the following questions…

What is the purpose of this social media status update?
Is it a blog post?
A branded image post or picture quote?
Is it a biz tip?
Are you asking a question?
Is it a personal post or picture sharing your lifestyle?

or it could strictly be a promotional post designed to showcase a new product or service. So identify your social media categories.

03

CREATE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT

The third step is to actually create your content. And make sure it is great! Block out 60 -90 minutes a week or however you want to do it and batch your content creation. Create folders on your desktop or on Google drive based on the content categories you just came up with. Then create all of your picture quotes, tips, branded images, etc in one shot.

Save them to your folder and then pull from them as you need them. You are basically building a social media library. Keep in mind that some of your posts (if not all of them) can be repurposed and used multiple times. People are not on social media all day long, so only a small portion of your fans are going to see your content at any given time throughout the day. Don’t waste all that time you spend putting your content together. Recycle, repurpose, reuse!

* Quick Tip: Create visually appealing, high impact, high value content that is designed with your target audience in mind and set out to wow them!

04

CREATE YOUR "STICK TO IT" SOCIAL MEDIA SCHEDULE

The fourth step is probably the most important. Create your “Stick To It” social media plan. Schedule your posts so you know what you are posting, when and where.

Skip this step and I guarantee you’ll end up driving yourself nuts. Social media is tedious, time consuming work. Creating your “Stick To It” schedule will eliminate a lot of that overwhelm and give you clarity on your marketing efforts.

Here’s what you need to do to create your schedule:

1. Pick the times throughout the day you want to post. Depending on your niche and your marketing style you may be posting once a day or once every hour.
2. Pick what you want to post in each time slot. You may need to create a separate scheduling system for different platforms if you want to post more on one particular platform, you don’t like the idea of posting the same posts at the same time across all your channels, or you have posts that are platform specific – i.e. posts for an Instagram contest)
3. Write everything up in a schedule so you can get a visual of what your marketing plan looks like and then finally schedule it for automation!
