A few months ago, I was asked to pitch Essence Magazine, a fabulous editorial geared toward the black community, for an article about the “rules to success”. I grew up reading Essence and am still a huge fan today. The impact they’ve made is beyond words and they continue to strive for excellence as they share entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle tips.

Make the decision to go after your dreams 100%. Create your own niche, dictate your own path, be a trailblazer. Don’t follow a standard template but find out what works for you. When you play by your own rules you create a life of zero competition and endless reward – You have no other option but to Win Big.
Know Your Definitive Purpose and Passion
Have a connection to the work you are doing. It’s not about a paycheck and earning a living it’s about doing what you love.
You don’t want to suffer your way to joy and financial freedom doing a job you don’t want to do.
Think about what you want to create and what community you want to serve so you have a crystal clear destination. Decide what you’ll give to the world and go after it with unwavering passion and conviction.
Don’t Go At It Alone
If you want to make your business work have a mentor or a community of people who can support you.
When you try to go at it alone you are forced to make up everything as you go, with zero guidance – you have no one to verify, motivate or keep the fire under your feet when you feel like giving up.
Why reinvent the wheel?
When you rely on your own skills you are left guessing and it means you have no one to hold you accountable. Who are you surrounded by? Are the people surrounding you contributing to your success. Success breeds success, so always make sure to surround yourself with greatness.
Give People A Reason To Need You
In a world where people have more than one choice you have to give people a reason to need you. Show off your skills, showcase your value and have a unique point of view.
Businesses that provide solutions, are accessible and over deliver on what they promise are capable of building brands that attract the masses.
Your goal is to service your audience in such a way that others are willing to advocate for you and your brand.

Don’t Second Guess Your Talents
You are meant to do what’s easy for you. Business owners fail because they go against their nature as entrepreneurs – trying to live up to expectations of others instead of embracing your talents.

If you’ve been scraping along in your business and find you are not respected, not getting the attention you deserve, or making the money you want to make, it’s probably not because you don’t know you stuff…it’s probably because you are doing a poor job of putting yourself in a position of power and authority.
Why Must You Become The Go-To Authority In Your Niche Anyways?
1. More Influence:
Who doesn’t like to be influential? Who doesn’t want to pay attention to the authority in your niche? It is much easier to make an impact when you can be heard and people take action as a result. Imagine having a platform to reach hundreds, thousands or even millions of people with your words, your ideas, your message?
2. More Recognition:
When you are everywhere, on Facebook, on blogs, in media, in magazine, at LIVE speaking events, on webinars, etc, etc, your reputation precedes you. People begin to equate your name as a successful authority in your niche even before they’ve heard you say anything. The just automatically think, if this person is everywhere they must be in demand!
3. More Clients:
When you are recognized as an expert, chasing prospect becomes a thing of the past. Your ideal client will be hunting you down…They will be the type of client/customer/prospect that can afford your services or products and will happily pay the fees you command because they feel comfortable investing in you because you know your stuff.
If you are consider yourself an”expert” in your niche but not getting the clients or money you should, take a look at your marketing message. A clear message = money. Making sure you can communicate your message to your target audience will immediately attract the type of clients you want to work with.
4. Less Selling:
If you are an entrepreneur, consultant or marketer, you are in the game of sells. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You are not only selling your products and services you are constantly selling yourself as well to potential clients, but as an authority in your niche, you are more teaching, less selling, but probably making more money than the sleazy, manipulative, salesman going for the hard close all the time.
When you are an expert, you don’t have to force people to buy. Your job is to educate them, so they can make the best decision. If you become great at educating people, showing them the benefits and the transformations that will come as a result of investing in you, you’ll never have to sell again.
5. Less Work:
As an authority in your field you don’t have to rely on gimmicks, tricks and magic bullets to build a successful business. As an expert you have the confidence that your systems and strategies are going to for the most part work as well today as they will 2, 5, 10 years from now.While technology and trends change, an authority can adapt because their foundations principles and concepts are timeless.
This leads to less work. You don’t have to keep reinventing yourself or wasting your time trying to figure out the latest gimmick. You create info-products, programs and systems that stand the test of time.
6. More Money:
Charges less money than the gurus or lowering your fees to compete is not the way to build your business. In fact, it’s the fastest way to work yourself out of business. As an authority in your niche, clients expect to pay more. Own your worth. If you want to be paid your value, be confident in your expertise.
Low value equates to low-quality and is often an indication of an inability to deliver.

Long term success comes from happy customers. Happy customers mean more referrals and more repeat transactions. It is important to nurture your leads, continue developing relationships with your subscribers and following up with buying customers.

Remember Your Dream
If you haven’t already, write a detailed description of your ultimate dream. Pull up a mental vision of your dream, your goals, what you desire and consider how it will change your life for the better. Write down as many details as you can. What type of person will you be? How much money will you have? What will your home look like? What will your relationships be like? How will you FEEL on a daily basis?
Write it all down– and read it to yourself every single day.

When we are confronted by fear and frustration, it’s easy to forget what we’re fighting for. It’s easy to let the importance of our dream dwindle away, and hope that maybe “someday” we’ll have the determination to make it happen.
Don’t let your dream die! Keep it sharp and clear in your own mind. Honor it and vow to keep moving toward it, no matter what it takes.
Reinforce the Benefits
If you find yourself losing steam and feeling overwhelmed by obstacles, take a sheet of paper and write down the benefits of your dream.
Make a list of the BENEFITS of your dream. A “benefit” is something you stand to GAIN.
So, for example, if part of your dream description goes something like this, “I am happily working for myself, doing work I love, and earning $100,000 per year” – then add these words to your list of benefits:
- Happiness
- Freedom
- Abundance
- Passion
- Fulfillment
Keep going until you have a long list of everything you stand to GAIN by continuing to work toward your goals.
After reading through this list and comparing it to how you feel right now, you should be more determined than ever to keep working toward your goals because acceptance of anything less is unthinkable.
See Obstacles as Temporary Detours
One of the most common reasons we lose our motivation is because we feel overwhelmed or intimidated by unexpected obstacles. We can have the strongest motivation in the world, and suddenly one little thing will throw our plans off-course, and we freeze. We let our dreams fall by the wayside. Or worse, we view obstacles as “signs” from the universe that we’re not “meant to succeed.”
Rather than allowing this to happen to you, simply CHOOSE not to let it bother you. Say to yourself, “An obstacle is nothing more than a detour on my path. I’ll find a way around it because I’m NOT giving up!” Just thinking a thought like that can empower you to begin moving forward again, even if you were initially intimidated.
Hint: a funny thing about obstacles is that they are usually as daunting as we CHOOSE TO MAKE THEM. If we moan and groan and fall to the ground in hysterical tantrum, the obstacle seems to grow bigger and more intimidating. If we instead shrug our shoulders, roll up our sleeves and put on our battle gear – the obstacle shrinks to the size of an mustard seed, and we can sidestep it gracefully.
Affirm the Possibilities
Another way we might lose our motivation is by beginning to doubt that our dreams were ever possible in the first place. When we first set our goals, we are convinced we can do it. But if results don’t show up right away, we might start to doubt ourselves, or doubt that our dreams are “realistic” enough. After all, if it was meant to be, if we were meant to be successful, it would happen quickly and easily, right? Logically we might know that’s pure BS, but emotionally we might feel like God is just toying with us.
If you feel your conviction begin to dwindle, blast the doubt right out of your head by reading success stories of others who have accomplished the impossible. Seek out written stories or tv programs about people who have overcome immense personal challenges to achieve success, and affirm that if they did it, you can too.
Better yet, WRITE YOUR OWN SUCCESS STORY! Here’s a good opener for your story:
“___________ (your name) never believed he (or she) had what it took to be successful, but that all changed when he decided to begin believing in himself. He decided to stop listening to the limiting beliefs that others tried to instill in him, and he made it his mission to rise above doubt and fear. With an iron determination, he went on to accomplish what others believed was impossible.”
Make your success story as long as you like, and customize it to your unique situation. Read it whenever you need an emotional boost.
Avoid Burnout
Sometimes we get SO motivated that we might take on too much, too fast and end up feeling burned out. You’ll know when this happens to you, because you start feeling stressed and overwhelmed, and irritated by even the littlest kinks in your plans.
You start feeling annoyed about having to work on your goals, and decide you’d rather take a nap. HONOR that feeling. Go with it. Climb into bed and have a good rest. It’s ok to take a time out. Go see a movie with a friend, or curl up with a good book by yourself. Go dancing, take a cooking class, go to the spa.
Do something completely unrelated to your goals, and feel good about it. We all need rest, recreation, and a reminder that there is more to life than pursuing our goals.

Taking Responsibility For Where You Are Right Now
The first step in developing a true success mindset is accepting your current situation. You must be accountable for your mistake, failures and triumphs understanding that where you sit right now is no one’s fault but your own.
Harsh..Yes!
Painful…Absolutely!
The truth hurts and it’s not fun to hear, I know. You might be inclined to come up with a laundry list of excuses as to why you have been a victim of your environment or that you’ve faced challenges in your life that are limiting what you are capable of achieving.
While I’m not going to site her and tell you that those experiences don’t matter, it’s important to understand that those challenges do not define who you are today or what you can become in the future.
It is only your perception of these events that matters!
It’s not what happens to you that is important, only what you choose to do with the experiences and the conclusions you draw about yourself because of them. –

Do you realize that there are thousands of people in this world who have survived absolutely horrific experiences, and then went on to become multi-millionaires and positively affect millions of lives?
Why can’t you do the same?
You can – if and only if you stop using your challenges as an excuse not to go after the success you deserve.
Embrace The Process
Many of us are under the false impression that we will one day take a giant leap from unsuccessful and frustrated to rich, happy and super-successful. It may surprise you to learn that success is instead a process of making the right choices. It rarely (if ever) happens in one swoop. Rather, you move toward success in small steps or stages and as you success grows your success mindset progresses as well.
You may be feeling that it will take forever to get where you want to go in life. You may feel that the challenge is too big, the road is too rocky, and the obstacles are too intimidating. Don’t believe the hype!
We are all fully capable of making small changes both mentally and physically. We begin strengthening our desire for more, believing in ourselves and our capabilities, and taking small steps toward the lives we truly desire – and BOOM! More and more opportunities begin to appear before us.
The result..
Our confidence skyrockets and we begin to NATURALLY gravitating toward choices that will support our deepest desires. We begin feeling an urge to do the things we know will create success, rather than shying away from them as we did in the past.
Clear Out the Cobwebs
Want to make a new start in your business and life, right now? Begin by clearing out the cobwebs from every corner of your life! If you remove the situations that are causing a blockage in your life, you will open the door to greater success and prosperity – in all areas of your life.
Allow Yourself to Be Successful
Can you really “see” yourself as a confident, successful person? If you close your eyes and envision yourself, what does that self look like? Is he or she enthusiastic about life, willing to take risks, eager to grasp the joy and abundance he/she deserves? Can you imagine this person with endless opportunities for growth and advancement in life?
If you can’t quite “see” yourself as being successful (or at least having the potential to be successful), it is likely that your own beliefs are creating an inner blockage.
Unless you turn this around and open your mind to what is possible, you will continue to sabotage your own efforts.
How to eliminate blockages in your life
Eliminating inner blockages is not as difficult as it may seem. The two main things you need to have are:
- the willingness to believe something different
- the courage to take action on your new beliefs.
The first step requires a large dose of faith when you first begin to shift your beliefs. All of the “evidence” in your life seems to reinforce your current beliefs, right?
You believe you are not successful, not confident, not courageous enough to take risks, and perhaps not the “lucky” type of person that finds great opportunities to move forward.
If these are your beliefs, your outer life probably “proves” them to be accurate. You may struggle with lack, fear, procrastination, confusion and frustration on a daily basis. Therefore you know your beliefs are “true”.
What many people fail to understand is that their beliefs are what create the “evidence” in their lives. Changing your limiting beliefs requires a willingness to have faith that you are NOT dumb, challenged, irresponsible, weak-willed, or unlucky – even though your experiences thus far seem to have “proven” those things as being true.

What Does Attitude Have to Do With Success?
A negative attitude will deflate your efforts to be successful.
Why?
A positive attitude gives you the ability to overlook setbacks and continue toward your goals. It gives you the courage to tackle challenges and believe in yourself. It helps you keep obstacles in perspective, rather than feeling intimidated and giving up.
I’m sure you’ve heard the famous quote by Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”
It’s all about perception!
Developing a positive attitude is a simple matter of consistently training your brain to see the positive side of every situation. It’s a choice! Rather than feeling powerless against challenges, affirm that you can get through them. Rather than letting other people determine what you are capable of – determine it yourself!
Don’t Try, Just Do
With the right attitude, focused action steps and a solemn vow to never give up, success will be yours.
Don’t approach your goals with an attitude of “try,” only an attitude of DO! That little gem by the fictional character of Yoda actually holds a tremendous amount of wisdom.
“Trying” means you are not going to give it your all. It means you will keep going until the going gets too tough. It means you are giving yourself an out in case you grow weary of the battle. It means you are giving yourself permission to surrender to mediocrity.
“Doing” means that failure is not an option. It means that you vow to give every ounce of blood, sweat and tears you have available because you believe in your dreams that much. It means that you cannot and will not accept defeat because the stakes are too high. It means that you are willing to work as long and as hard as necessary to achieve the outcome you desire, even if it takes years.
This is your life and you must decide that there is no going back, no giving up, no giving in – NO MATTER WHAT!

As entrepreneurs it’s easy to be in a constant state of go-go-go. We are always building, growing, networking, learning, consulting, creating, working…and unless someone taps you on the shoulder to tell you to slow down, you might run yourself right into the ground.
Building a successful business requires you to be fast paced, motivated and energy filled. You must be at the top of your game at all times but when should you slow down to move forward?
After two years of grinding it out online, I looked up one day and found myself drained, unmotivated and stressed out. My business was stagnant, even though I was working harder than ever, my family felt neglected even though the very reason I was working so hard was to give them the lifestyle they deserve, and I found myself sacrificing the joys of life even though I was making money.
Then one day I just dropped it all. The client calls, the blog posts, the emails, the facebook updates. All stopped. No people, no noise, no technology, no distractions, no social media marketing to-do-list. Just me and my thoughts. For 3 days I didn’t check an email, write a blog post, or talk to a client.
It was one of the hardest things I’ve done.
Being idle can be scary. It causes us to occupy our time and use our thoughts in a new way. Being idle is not just about slowing down, but tuning in, paying attention more to ourselves than our daily business tasks. All the chatter and activity is gone and we are left alone to simply rest.
The Power of Rest
You get to slow down: See and appreciate the world around you. Think about your life without constantly reacting to the thousands of demands your business throws at you each day.
You do things you’d never do: When you pull away from your business, your priority changes. Life gets simpler. You can observe, explore, and engage more than you ever would when in the depths of running your business. Intentional time to do other things – no matter what what they are- can be valuable for us all.
You learn to appreciate self: Spending time focusing on you and not your business allows you to get to know yourself just a little bit better. You get to be yourself, not worry about the demand and opinions of others, and you can find comfort in appreciating your own company and what it takes to be happy throughout the day.
How To Get The Most Out Of Your Rest Days
1. Schedule it. Pick at least one day or ideally a full weekend or few days to rest each month. This means setting an appointment with yourself and your family where you turn off the computer, put down the phone and unplug the business mind.
2. Get our of Town. Rest is best experienced when you put yourself in a new environment. As entrepreneurs and business owners, many of us work from home or carry elements of our business into our homes at the end of the day. It helps to break the pattern of everyday life and to-dos by getting out of dodge completely and inserting yourself into new surroundings.
3. Find Your Happy Place. Your happy place is anywhere you can go and instantly feel refreshed, revamped and re-energized. This could be the beach, your childhood home, a friends summer home or a tent in your backyard. It’s a place without distractions, where you can meditate, be quiet and focus inward on self. Your happy place is one where you have no choice but to slow down and take some time for yourself.
4. Reconnect With Nature: Tap in to the calming elements of nature. There is something refreshing about the trickle of water or the feel of green grass under your feet. Connecting with nature immediately calms your nerves and the desire to get a million things done all at once. Surrounding yourself with fresh air, sunlight, the bright colors and sounds of the outdoors is some of the best stress killing therapy you can find.
5. Ask Yourself Big Questions: Once you get away from the outside noise, you can finally ask yourself the questions that really matter. What am I passionate about? What have I accomplished and am I on track to achieving my goals? What is my purpose? How is my current work impacting others? The point of this is to dig deep and take the time to learn more about who you are as a person.
Taking Back The Time You Deserve
Life is just too complicated, too fast and too demanding to not reserve some time to ourselves and our families every once in a while. It’s not just about resting and taking time away from your business, it’s about getting unplugged, eliminating stress and balancing your priorities in life. For those of you who claim you don’t have time because you always “have business to take care of”, you are the ones who need it most.
Trust me, I was there with you.
When you hit walls in your business this might be because you are burnt out with all the effort and hours you are putting in. The only reason your business can fail is if you can’t sustain it. Make sure you switch off every once in a while, go to the spa, take a trip or a vacation –push the reset button then come back and kill it!
Marketing campaigns, reports, client projects and emails will always be there waiting for you. Success in your life is just as important if not more than success in your business. Get used to taking time to rest, to reevaluate and re-energize. Make it a priority in your life. Your body, your mind and your business will thank you for it.

Whether you are writing your ideas and goals on a napkin at the corner cafe or hiring a professional writer to put your thoughts to paper, your online business plan is the lifeline to any entrepreneur’s success when leveraging the internet to promote and market your products and services. While business plans come in all shapes, sizes and formats the core elements should be the same. So make sure your online business plan is up to par by asking yourself these key questions. It can mean the difference between a successful home business and a failing one.
Key Questions Every Entrepreneur Should Ask When Writing An Online Business Plan
#1 Do you have what people want? What value do you have that people will be willing to pay for…is it a product, service, skill? You can have what YOU think is the brightest idea, but if no one if buying or no one needs what you’re selling, then you are out of luck. One of the main goals of your online business plan is to define what problems and challenges your target market needs and solve their problems with the knowledge and expertise your posses. This will help you outline the unique features and benefits of your product or service. Make sure you have them written out and use them as a reference when developing your sales and marketing materials.
Always remember this: If you are not solving problems you are not making money.
#2 What, who, and where is your target market? I know I know, this is more like three questions in one, but before you get to marketing your product to any and everyone, know your niche…health and wellness, internet marketing, social
media, wine, motivational speaking, custom invitations, video marketing, etc. Next know who you are targeting…athletes, small business owners, corporations, the rich, the poor, college students, stay at home moms…I think you get my point here. Lastly, know where your target market hangs out both online and offline. For example does your ideal customer frequent the gym, the internet, facebook, day cares, or church functions, small business seminars.
By answering these 3 questions you will define what your ideal customer looks like…what we like to call your AVATAR. Only when you have a crystal clear idea on who you are selling to and where you can find them can you focus the right time and energy into the most effective and profitable marketing and lead generation strategies.
#3 Who’s your competition? Unless you have invented a product that has never been seen before you will always have competition…and even if your novel invention is a first to market…if it’s a goldmine, the competition is not too far behind. You will always be competing with someone else. Other business owners, other marketers, other distributors, other entrepreneurs within your niche.
Once you know the other players in the game you can adjust your marketing plan and brand to be a cut-above the rest. If
there is nothing unique about your offerings, mo perceived added value a customer gets from joining or buying from you, or if you are priced too high over your competition who is providing comparable products and services, then you’ll lose every time.
#4 What’s your intention statement? What the heck is an intention statement. Your intention statement is the core of your success map will communicate what you are trying to do and how you plan to do it. It can be one sentence or as long as a couple of paragraphs but keep it concise and to the point. The shorter, the better. #5 What is your personal promise to your customers and business partners? Start with “I promise to…” Offer a gourmet coffee experience at a decent price? Provide step by step tutorials on building a brand from home? This is something you have to know. I promise to provide online marketers cutting-edge access to the most effective Facebook marketing strategies.
#6 What are my greatest challenges or obstacles? Identify what might keep you from being successful. Inferior resources, limited knowledge, lack of strategic partnerships, fear, the wrong attitude (yes your mindset if the greatest obstacle of them all). It’s important to identify these things, so that you can come up with solutions. The better PROBLEM SOLVER you become the better plan of action you will have for dealing with these road blocks.
#7 What are your marketing and sales plans? Develop a plan that will maximize your business exposure, help you
generate targeted leads and then convert those leads into buying customers. Will you market online, using social media, Facebook, billboards, trade shows, at local meet ups. Do you have an elevator pitch (can you quickly tell someone what you do in 15 seconds or less) and create value while doing so? What are the price points for your products and services? Also, what are your sales goals?
#8 Do you need a staff or external support? While most of us are solo-entrepreneurs or small business owners, ask yourself can you achieve your marketing and sales goals by doing everything on your own? There may be some tasks you do not know how to do or even want to do yourself. If this is the case, you must account for future employees, the possibility of outsourcing or investing in learning the skills you need to run your ship if paying others is not an option.
The better prepared you are as an entrepreneur, whether you run a home based business or small retail shop, you must have a success map that will guide you along the way. The worst feeling you can have as an entrepreneur is to have your visions and dreams collapse because you failed to plan!
