How To Combat Information Overload

Posted on May 10, 2011

information overloadWe’ve all heard the saying Information is Power. Information is the currency of today’s world and those who use information to their advantage not only have the potential to become powerful and influential but wealthy. Information is the foundation of any successful business and information is what helps you as a marketer learn what you need to know to implement the right techniques and strategies. Without information- and the right information -you will get left behind in this industry.

If you are a network marketer, Internet marketer, affiliate marketer, blogger or product owner building a business online you learn and invest in the information that will create for you a winning business then turn around and promote and market your own information. The question is how to avoid getting caught up in information overload.

Too Much Information

It is extremely easy to get caught up and paralyzed by information overload. We all have the desire to succeed and we want to learn, absorb and digest every eBook, course or product that is going to help us get there faster. But beware, too much information is not good for your health or the health of your online business.

While information is very important, it is also a crutch that can handicap you. A lot of people waste a lot of time learning and not taking action, then wonder why they are not making any money. They know all of the latest and greatest techniques but they haven’t put the courses and the books down long enough to implement anything. What I want to do today is talk to you about my methods to taking information and putting it into action.

I feel like this is important because it teach you how to apply what you’ve learned…Immediately!

Know Your Niche and Know What You Want To Learn

You can’t possibly learn everything there is to know about every single technique and tactic. When you try to learn everything you find that you know a little bit about a lot but don’t know enough about one thing to become an expert. You’re subscribed to hundreds of different blogs and lists and membership sites that teach you all you need to know about building a successful business online. The problem is that you can’t FOCUS on what you need to know because you’re focusing on all you need to learn.

Identify the key concepts or areas you must learn in order to take your online business to the next level and if you are new to Internet marketing figure out what you need to get STARTED…One thing.

So How Do You Get Started

Write down the strategies and techniques that will help you to move your business forward. Be very exact about what it is you need to learn. For example “how to drive more traffic to your blog” versus “blogging” or “how to increase my affiliate income” versus “affiliate marketing.”

Here are a list of techniques I write down that I feel can help my Online Business:

  • How To Use Facebook To Drive Traffic To My Blog
  • How To Create Autoresponder Emails That Convert Into Sales
  • How To Increase My YouTube Video Views
  • How To Brand and Market ME Effectively
  • How To Repurpose My Content Into Informational Products

Now these are all areas of my business that I want to improve over the next few months. This list will change and I’ll continue to add and subtract from it as I complete actions and move on the others but my point is this. I’ve identified the major areas that need my immediate attention, some of the major obstacles I’ve had or want to continue improving that will help me move my business to the next level.

How To Organize Your Information

To combat information overload it is important and smart to organize your information by creating a system. This system will save you a lot of time and effort. Having a system to organize the blogs you follows, categorizing your eBooks and courses and grouping your articles and content will make it a lot easier for you to identify what’s important and what’s not. Create folders that are based on different topics, niches or internet training. You want to sort each piece of information into an area that can be found in seconds so you avoid getting cluttered and overwhelmed.

The key here is organization.

Focus On One Area At A Time

Information is just information is you do not apply what you’ve learned and put it in to action. Don’t try to learn everything all at once. Instead identify the skill sets and techniques you’ll need to know to move forward. For instance, if you want to learn how to improve your results with webinars the best use of your time is to read articles or watch videos about creating wealth with webinars.

Focusing on a single topic is the fastest and easiest way to establish yourself as an expert and authority.

Finding Valuable Information

Now that you’ve compiled all of the information that is relevant to your topic, start going doing your research. You want to check out various sites such as:

  • Google to search relevant keywords
  • Watch YouTube Videos and webinars related to your content of interest
  • Listen to audios and or podcasts that discuss this topic
  • Join membership sites and optin to email lists relating to this topic
  • Go To Amazon and search your topic
  • Read books and magazines to decrease the learning curve

You want to do these things because you want to get a greater understanding and perspective on what other marketers in your niche are doing. Do your research, see what’s popular, what others are searching for and discover the various cutting-edge techniques you can use. It is also not a bad idea to purchase an information product on your subject of interest. In my opinion this is the best way to quickly learn the nuts and bolts of a particular Internet marketing technique. With that said, you always want to do your due diligence and research every product before you make a purchase.

Trimming The Fat

There will be a lot of information that you will compile from a number of sources and the best way to gather this information into a handy and useful resource is to compress it all into a single document. This is very important in that is eliminates any duplicate or redundant content. You should only include information that you will want to immediately apply to you online marketing business.

Turning Information Into Action

Taking everything you’ve learned and creating a plan of action, one that you can begin to implement immediately to get the results you desire, will be the key to your success. By putting your information into a series of action steps you are essentially creating a project list, a step-by-step goal sheet that is easy to follow, effective and simple. You can’t get much done with piles of unorganized information that you don’t quite know what to do with. It’s better to have a blueprint you can work through.

Once you have your blueprint, take massive action. Plans are nothing without action and the secret to success in this industry is performing income producing activities that get results. Implement the techniques you’ve learned from the information you’ve collected and master them. Once you’ve mastered one strategy move on to the next. This is the process of going from learning to doing. If you make this a habit it will become a part of your daily routine and you’ll be able to repeat this with every new project or marketing strategy you use to get your business to the next level.

Everyone online faces some degree of information overload — and it is something that can road block even the most experienced marketers from time to time, but if you make a conscious decision about where to put your focus *today*, and schedule the time to take action on the information you take in, you’ll find that the “never caught up” feeling starts to recede into the distance.

Don’t feel like you need to learn it all at once. Like many others, I started my online business knowing nothing. What has brought me to the point I am at today is my ability to take the information I’ve learned and turn it into action. The process of concentrating on one technique at a time creates for you a simple plan that you can continue to work on until you become a master at it. Once you’ve mastered that technique you can officially promote yourself to “EXPERT!”

To Your Success
