Create The Ultimate Office Space To Run A Successful Home Based Business

Posted on June 1, 2011

office space for successful home based businessThis may sound cliche, but if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. This statement is universal and applies to all aspects of your life including creating a space to run a successful home based business. Successful entrepreneurs are not created by accident, success entrepreneurs plan for and prepare for success. Today I want to show you how and where you need to get organized and prepared in order to ensure a successful home based business.

Creating A Space To Operate A Successful Business

Creating A Physical Location: While some people can sit at the local Starbucks or coffee shop all day banging out their work without being distracted, most need their own space to run a successful home based business.  It’s always great to get outside the house, mix it up a bit, get a new energy flow. It helps break up the monotony. But with that said, most of your income producing activities are going to be performed inside your home so it is very important to have a  professional home-based office, a place where you feel comfortable, most productive and in focus.

Creating Space In Your Life: A home based business requires making room in your life to do the work necessary to create an income. About 90% of people in the home based business industry work a 9-5 and are building their business part-time. It is important to look at your schedule and map out a plan for your business so you can operate it as effectively as possible. You must determine:

  • When you are going to work your business.
  • What hours of the day you are committed to working your home based business.
  • What sacrifices you are willing to make.
  • How to convey to your family, spouse, friends your level of commitment?

Creating a space in your life for your business and making it your priority is key to your professional success. The first place to building your business is in your home office, your professional creativity space. Here is my list for creating the ultimate office space in which to operate and run a successful home based business.

  1. A Quiet Place To Work, Free of Distractions with a Desk: You’ll want to use a spare room or an area in your home that you can use ONLY for business. Make sure it’s an area where you can lock the door behind you, away from the kids, away from the dog, etc. This is YOUR work space.
  2. A Wireless or Cordless Phone: We are in the talking business. Being able to communicate with prospects, your team, and vendors, and other people who keep your business going is critical.
  3. A Computer: We live in a high tech age and a computer keeps you connected, organized and most of the times productive. It is also an absolute must if you plan on having a global organization.
  4. Printer: We all know the importance of having a printer. Get one!
  5. Fax Machine: You will have to use a fax at one time or another. You don’t want to have to hop in your car and drive all the way to Kinkos just to fax one sheet of paper.
  6. White Board: When you are building a business, keeping track of your organization, your tasks, important telephone numbers, etc. on a white board is cool to have for easy reference.
  7. Back Up Hard Drive: You absolutely NEED to be able to back up your data. Especially if you are an Internet entrepreneur, author a blog and have contract management systems. Back up your work regularly. If you don’t do it, there will come a time when you will be praying you did!
  8. File Folder and Filing Cabinet: A necessity for keeping your file folders organized.
  9. Organizer/Planner: You are in a business that requires you to make and keep track of important meetings, appointments, events, conference calls, webinars, and other business building tasks. You can have a business without having a planner. I personally use my iPhone to keep track electronically and it is a cool way to have your schedule, contacts, emails and other events synchronized in one place.
  10. A Professional Email Address: Doing business through a professional email address gives you instant credibility and let’s people know you are a serious entrepreneur. An email address like crazyboy@gmail.com does not send off the same message as andrea@andreabolder.com. In fact, if you haven’t already done so, go buy your personal name as a domain name right now. You will also want to create a Signature for your email address. This is a short branding statement that let’s people know who you are and what you do.  It is automatically included at the bottom of every email you send once you create one.
  11. Essential Software: Microsoft Office has all of the basics you need to run a home based business. In addition to the basics, you may want to consider programs such as GoToWebinar for running webinars and web meetings, Camtasia for screen sharing, and a few others that may come in handy.

Carving out both physical space and space for in your daily life to run your business are both key elements of your game plan. Success comes from being focused, efficient and productive and all of these elements will help you to maximize your profits. Take the time to create and organize your own business sanctuary so that it becomes a place that you can go to build the business of your dreams!
