Get More Blog Traffic: Why You Should Be Spending Time Blog Commenting

Posted on March 21, 2011

increase traffic with blog commentingWhen looking to get more traffic to your network marketing blog, blog commenting is an underrated but very important way to build an online presence and make more money in your online business.

I touch on blog commenting in my Internet Marketing Success Secrets eBook, but I want to give you an in-depth and detailed understanding on this marketing strategy…yes it is that important! This method, like many others I discuss on this site take dedication and consistent implementation to be effective. So if you are ready to work you can see a great impact.

Blog commenting is not just about visiting a few blogs and leaving comments, its about establishing yourself as a presence in the industry and showcasing your expertise among your peers.

So let’s break down the hows and whys of blog commenting.

How many comments do you need to do? I recommend leaving 10 – 20 comments each day. Yep, that’s a lot but I will go deeper into the importance of this and the quality of the comments you should be making.

The key is to take a few minutes to read the article or posts and a minimum of 5 minutes to leave a thoughtful and insightful comment. Contributing a little over an hour a day to blog commenting is an essential component of your daily marketing strategy.

There are many sites that you will go back to multiple times a week, but the purpose is to spread the comment love as much as possible. Your goal should be to comment on 60-80 blogs within the next two weeks to jumpstart your  traffic generation efforts.

What blogs should you visit?

1. First off, always make sure you visit the blogs of people that have commented on your blog.

2. Follow leaders or authority figures in your niche

3. Following blogs that are good and provide valuable content. It’s important to comment on peoples sites that you like. If you don;t like the quality of the content or the blogger in general feel free to pass on commenting on their site.

Number of comments: You want to look for blogs that don’t have an enormous amount of comments but want to steer clear from sites with too few comments. If comment on sites with too few comments it may not be seen by many people and may not be worth your time. on the other hand if you comment on a site with 75+ comments then your comment will never get noticed. A good rule of thumb is to target sites that get 5-50 comments for the majority of their posts so your comments don’t lost in the crowd.

If you are a fan of the site with low traffic, there is absolutely nothing wrong with leaving a comment anyways, just realize return traffic to your site will be minimal.

As with any marketing method, you must make it a habit, a routine and be consistent in your effort.

Commentluv is a very popular wordpress plugin that is an absolute must have for  any network marketing blog. Commentluv is a plugin that will allow you to pick one of the last 10 posts you published on your blog that you would like to link back to when leacvngin comments on others blogs. This allows you to get extra backlinks to your blog and you can promote or highlight a specific topic or pillar posts.

For example, if you are commenting on a post about online marketing strategies for your network marketing business, then this article would be an obvious one to link to, but if the article you are commenting on was about Video Marketing then you might want to consider choosing a link to a post that is relevant to video marketing or similar marketing methods.

Your Blog Comments: The comment you leave is very important. It must be insightful and relevant feedback. The least you should do is review and rephrase what the author states in their post to show you actually read the content. Leaving simple and uninsightful comments can actually been seen as “spammy” and they are the weakest type of comments.

  • Give your opinion: Your opinion counts.  Remember that.  Do not be to shy to state your opinion.
  • Be Witty and Fun: If you can come in with a fun, witty comment that is relevant to the post it can be one of the best comments.  It is both quick and you will be remembered.
  • Ask questions: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and further the conversation. There is nothing wrong with asking questions to get a better understanding of the content or asking information that with deepen the topic of the conversation. It is all about interaction. That’s the difference between a blog and a static website!
  • Answer a question: A lot of bloggers will end their posts with a question or a challenge; this is done for one reason: to make it easy for you to comment or to come back to share your own results.Know that if you have a question about something presented by a blogger, other people probably have the same question as well. You can stand out as much with an intelligent question as you can with an intelligent comment.
  • The Argument/debate: Everyone loves a little controversy. If you don’t agree with something the blogger said, leave a comment expressing your opposing opinion. It does not mean you need to disagree with every word they said, or that they are completely wrong. Many times there is more than one way to skin a cat and presenting a different approach to something can broadedn everyones understanding while providing multiple solutions to a probelm. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing, just make sure you are respectful and do it with tact.

The elements of a good comment: Your main purpose as a commenter is to engage with the blog author and visitors.  The goal is for the comment to be informative, enlightening or insightful so that you draw the attention of people visiting the blog and get them to in turn visit your site.  Engage, Engage, Engage!

Why Do You Spend a Lot of Time on Blog Commenting?
There are a number of great reasons for blog commenting.  This short video shares my top ten:

Things to Avoid When Blog Commenting

  • Steer clear of negative comments: There is nothing wrong with disagreeing, but if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Remember what your momma taught you!
  • Say something constructive: You want to engage and interact with the blog author and their readers by saying something that will continue to drive the conversation.  It is always appreciated when you let the blogger know you took the time to read the post since they took the time to write it.
  • Don’t use foul or disrespectful language: When visiting someone else’s site, avoid using foul and rude language.  A blog like someone’s home; they invite you in and you should treat it with respect. By not doing so you will simply damage you reputation and your brand.
  • Don’t be a link peddler: Unless there is a very specific post you have written that will clarify a very specific problem avoid putting a link back to yourself within your comment post.  You get enough links with Commentluv.  No need to be greedy.
  • What You Need for Blog Commenting:

    • You own Blog or Website: Though putting your “Website” address is almost always an optional field, if you are implementing commenting marketing with the intent to increase blog traffic and/or links to your website or blog, it certainly helps to have something that can be linked to.
    • Email address is almost always needed when leaving a comment: I recommend using an email address that is derived from the domain name of your site (i.e. yourname@thenameofyourblog.com), but if you don’t have one yet, don’t let it stop you, a simple Hotmail or Gmail address will do just fine.
    • Gravatar image: You can leave comments and feedback without having a Gravatar image, but it decreases the efficiency and impact of your marketing efforts.  A Gravatar is a great way to promote you and your brand through a simple image and not having one makes people question the legitimacy of your brand. It can also be a red flag to the blogger that your comment may be spam so without a Gravatar image most blog readers will never see your comment if it gets sent directly to spam.  A Gravatar is not “needed”  but it is highly recommended.

    So That’s All Folks!

Please leave a comment on commenting.  Do you have more to add?  Ideas and perspectives I have missed.  Please comment below.  I’m a sucka for good feedback. Remember: at the very least you will get a nice backlink to your own site.

Once you are done commenting I challenge you to go out there and leave quality comments on 20 sites a day.  That will be 140 comments by this time next week.  Make sure at least 60-80 of those comments are on unique sites.  And of course, please let me know how much your traffic increased over the week.

    Yours In Success,

      Hey Andrea,
You said it all in a nutshell here on blog commenting. One thing I like to add is to add some type of value when it comes to blog commenting. In some my posts, someone would add some type of value by maybe adding a specific strategy or a more convenient way to do your marketing campaign. Thanks for sharing this valuable information. This will definitely give a great understanding to many of why blog commenting is so important!

Yeah that is highly recommended. Sharing ideas and finding better or new ways of doing things is always valuable. Building a solid business is about being open to learning new things and understanding that you may not know it all. Opening up a discussion about various topics helps to broaden not only the commenters horizons but helps every one of the readers on that blog!

I really havent used this strategy much but the times that I have commented on high profile blogs I get a peak in traffic coming back to my blog. You gave some great tips hear Andrea.

An indication that there just may be something to this comment marketing. I think it’s another way to get targeted traffic and to connect with different people. It’s like going to a party at someone else’s house (their blog in this case) and mingling! You never know who you’re going to leave with =)

Great post Andrea! Thanks for the instructions on how to comment and and what NOT to do too. Terrific content and tips!

      • Anonymous

Thanks Tim. I was debating on whether to put in the “what NOT to do” section. My post was already super long but you never know sometimes people need to know what NOT to do just as much as they need to know the right things to do!

      Hi Andrea,

      A sensational commenting breakdown here.

We should seek to leave an impression with each comment. I’ve strayed from my personal “5 minutes” per comment rule but your advice is a reminder to get back into impactful commentating. It makes a difference.

      Thanks for sharing Andrea!

Hey Ryan. It’s hard to stick with something as monotonous as blog commenting but it is one of those methods that if you stay consistent can have a huge impact over time. I actually wrote this post because I had gotten away from my routine so I am forcing myself to get back to it because I’ve seen how much of an impact it made on my blog when i stopped doing it!!

So we are in this together. Let me know what kind of traffic you get as a result of your recommitment!

Wow, 20 comments a day seems a lot. Even if it only takes 5 miutes a comment that is nearly two hours a day, allowing for time to find suitable blogs. How does this compare with spending 2 hours writing new content for your own blog?

That said, I agree with your guide to comment etiquette. It is just a shame that not everyone around the net folows your example.
